FAIRFAX, Va. - Too many early losses were the downfall for American University wrestling in a 23-15 loss at George Mason (6-0) on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles (2-4) ended up with four wins overall, including the last two of the dual.

Notable

• American's wins came at 133 from sophomore Jack Maida, 165 from freshman Caleb Campos, 197 from redshirt junior Connor Bourne, and heavyweight from redshirt sophomore Isaac Righter.
• Maida took a 3-0 lead with a takedown in the first and an escape early in the second against Mason's Josh Jones, and later got the riding time point to shut out Jones with a 4-0 win by decision.
• Campos' exciting bout swung back and forth between him and Drew Dickson. 
• With a takedown, Campos took a 2-1 lead halfway through the second, and then fell behind 3-2 before going up 4-3 and getting riding time in a 5-4 victory.
• Bourne was down 1-0 before an escape tied it up with just over a minute left in the third. From there, Bourne turned it up a notch and got a late takedown for a 3-2 victory over Jon List.
• The team victory was out of reach for American with a few bouts left, but Righter made it a strong finish for AU with a pin of Donovan Sprouse in 2:19.

Thoughts from Head Coach Jason Borrelli

• "We came out flat. I worried a little bit about that, coming out of finals and watching our guys in practice. Just was a little lull all week. I felt like we had talked about from a philosophical standpoint and things we had worked on, the guys would understand the importance of being ready from the first whistle and I felt like we weren't for that entire dual and it caught up to us. That's disappointing, because you often have the same thing at the NCAA Tournament being around an exam time. Going through a finals period and having to perform at a high level is a given in this sport and in many sports, and it's not an excuse. We just didn't get up for it, and that's something we have to continue to work on as a team. There's no excuse for not being ready in a dual like this. Other teams are going through it, and it's going to happen at the NCAA Tournament."
