PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Wrestling opened its 2021-22 slate on Saturday afternoon with a hard fought 29-18 loss to No. 21 Purdue. This was the Dragons first home match since February 15, 2020.

Drexel got off to a slow start in the lightweight matches, taking three tough losses to the Boilermakers at 125lbs, 133lbs and 141lbs.

Luke Nichter stepped up at 149lbs to give the Dragons their first points of the day. The sophomore took a 3-0 lead in the second period before forcing an injury default for a six-point victory.

Drexel quickly changed the pace, securing wins in the following four matches. Parker Kropman continued the trend at 157lbs, taking a commanding 5-1 victory from No.9 nationally ranked Kendall Coleman. Kropman lead through all three periods to move Drexel back within five points. Evan Barczak then took a shutout 3-0 decision at 165lbs for a three-point victory, putting the Dragons at their smallest deficit of the day, 14-12.

Mickey O'Malley proved to be the turning point for Drexel at 174lbs. The redshirt-junior dominated against another nationally ranked opponent in Gerrit Nijenhuis, taking home a fall victory at 2:43 on the clock. O'Malley's win gave Drexel its first lead of the day at 18-14. His win opened the door for Bryan McLaughlin to widen the gap at 184lbs, but an extremely close sudden victory period fell in favor of Purdue as the Dragons held on to a one point lead.

The Boilermaker's picked up a pair of timely wins in the two heavyweight matchups featuring Sean O'Malley (197) and Liam Dietrich (285), securing a 29-18 victory on the afternoon.

The Dragons are back in action tomorrow at East Stroudsburg University where they are set to compete in the 53rd annual East Stroudsburg Open at 9 a.m.

"I am very happy with the way we competed today. Our effort was strong, and we were aggressive throughout. Kropman and O'Malley really shined with wins over ranked opponents. I'm also proud of the young guys, they wrestled very tough as well Overall good start and a lot of positives to take into tomorrow's tournament at East Stroudsburg."
