12/19/2022 5:48:00 PM

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Cornell wrestling team went 1-1 on the first day of the Collegiate Duals, topping Oregon State 32-7 before falling to No. 6 Iowa State by a narrow 18-13 decision. The Big Red moved to 1-2 on the season with the split at the New Orleans Convention Center.

The Big Red's win over a Beaver squad that has been ranked at times during the season was impressive right from the start, as freshman Brett Ungar topped All-American Brandon Kaylor 3-1 in sudden victory to kick it off at 125, one of eight wins for Cornell. Jacob Cardenas also grabbed a huge win over a top 10 wrestler at 197 pounds, with the junior earning a 9-5 win over 10th-ranked Tanner Harvey. In all, the Big Red won all six matches between ranked wrestlers, with Vito Arujau picking up a tech fall at 133 and Yianni Diakomihalis winning by fall at 149.

In the nightcap, Cornell led 13-9 after seven matches, with the highlight an overtime victory by top-ranked Diakomihalias over No. 5 Paniro Johnson, 3-1. The three-time NCAA champion fought off a couple of deep attacks, only to score in the sudden victory session in the day's feature match. The Cyclones bumped up their final two grapplers, fourth-ranked Marcus Coleman from 184 to 197, and No. 2 Yonger Bastida from 197 to heavyweight. Both were able to pick up tight victories to clinch the win, including a last-second takedown by Bastida to close out the match. Vince Cornella and Chris Foca joined Arujau and Diakomihalis in going 2-0 on the day, with Focaearning bonus point wins over ranked opponents at 174 pounds in both wins.

Cornell will wrestler for third place against an opponent TBD on Tuesday afternoon.
