Wrestlers Open Ivy Slate With Win over Columbia

January 22, 2022 | Wrestling

The long-awaited Ivy League title defense for the Princeton wrestling team began on Saturday in Dillon Gym, and one match in, the Tigers remain on course.

Victories in each of the last three matches of the day polished off a 27-12 win for No. 19 Princeton over Columbia in what was the first of five Ivy League contests for the 2020 league champions. The next two will be on the road, at Harvard and Brown, next weekend.

In what was the lone battle of the day between two wrestlers included on the recently released NCAA coaches rankings, No. 1 Patrick Glory won his 30th consecutive match, getting a tech-fall victory over No. 15 Joe Manchio, 17-2.

Glory had a first-period takedown to open the scoring before pushing that to a 7-0 lead after two, adding a takedown and a two-point near fall around an escape. Glory then had a 10-point third period to earn the tech fall.

Princeton looked to make it two wins to start the afternoon with Nick Kayal at 133, but after Kayal had a 7-3 lead inside the final minute of the second period, Rini got a pair of points back on a takedown late in the period and then pulled away in the third on the way to a 12-7 win to cut Princeton's lead to 5-3.

At 141, Danny Coles, coming off a pivotal win against Arizona State's Cleveland Belton that helped Princeton defeat the then-No. 6-ranked Sun Devils 20-18, came up just short against Columbia's No. 12-ranked Matt Kazimir, 1-0. Kazimir got the bout's lone point on an escape to start the third period, and despite a push for points by Coles in the waning seconds of the match, none were granted, allowing Kazimir to put Columbia ahead 6-5.

Columbia added to the lead with a win at 149 on a match that went to three extra periods before Dominic Rossetti used an escape and a riding-time point to get three points for the Lions and win, 5-4.

Though Columbia led 9-5 at that point, following the match at 149 would be the last time the Lions held a lead.

Quincy Monday, No. 8 in the nation, was coming off a pair of losses against fellow top-15 opponents and delivered six big points for Princeton with a pin of Andrew Garr, using a pair of first-period takedowns to build a 4-2 lead after a period on the way to a fall in 4:11.

Blaine Bergey, a rookie making his debut in a counting dual-match contest, then grew Princeton's lead to 14-9 with his win at 165. Bergey turned a one-point deficit into a one-point lead with a late first-period takedown to stand up 3-2 after three minutes. He then added a second-period takedown on the way to a 6-3 lead heading into the third before tacking on two more takedowns on the way to a 10-5 win.

Columbia's final points of the day came at 174, where No. 33 Nick Fine had a 5-0 win over Nate Dugan, and Princeton won the final three matches of the day to increase a 14-12 lead to the 27-12 final.

Travis Stefanik opened that run with a 7-2 win at 184, getting a first-period takedown to lead 2-1 after the first three minutes. Stefanik led 4-2 with a minute to go in the match, securing the win with a takedown and the riding-time point.

Stefanik's win pushed Princeton's lead to 17-12, and No. 17 Luke Stout provided the clincher. Building scoring a first-period takedown, Stout's lead stood at 2-1 entering the third, needing just 45 seconds in that period to add an escape, another takedown and finally the pin in 5:45.

Stout's six points pushed Princeton's lead to 23-12 with one match to go, sealing the win for the Tigers.

Matt Cover then turned in a major-decision win at heavyweight, getting it going with a late first-period takedown to take a 2-0 lead that stayed that way into the third. In the final period of the day, Cover pulled away with the help of a reversal and a two-point near fall at the buzzer to get the bonus point.
