Wrestling Earns 10th Dual Win For First Time Since 2011, 19-17 over George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. - Timely wrestling was the story of AU's performance in tonight's dual meet against George Mason, as the Eagles tallied 28 third period points and won two bouts from behind on their way to a 19-17 win.

Notable

Tonight's dual began at 174, and Caleb Campos took care of business for AU with a 14-5 major decision against Mason's Riley Hackworth. He got going in the second period, pulling off a double reversal and a takedown to take a 9-4 lead, then cruised to the major.
Next up was Carsten Rawls at 197, who lost a close bout against Tyler Kocak. The score was tied 1-1 until Kocak completed a takedown with 10 seconds remaining in the third period.
Will Jarrell got AU back on track with a technical fall against Ean Winchester, dominating the bout with three takedowns while earning eight near fall points on his way to a 19-1 victory. The win was his 20th of the season.
At 125, redshirt freshman Coen Bainey pulled off a late reversal to break a 1-1 tie and take the decision 2-1 over Ben Monn. A clutch victory for Bainey's third win in a row, his dual record now stands at 7-5.
Next up was JJ Peace, wrestling up a weight class after competing at 125 earlier in the day. The freshman took down Geoffrey Whelan four times in what ended in a 16-6 major decision, Peace's fourth of the year.
Raymond Lopez also wrestled up a weight class after competing at 133 against UVA earlier in the day, and found himself down 7-1 at the start of the third period. In the final 1:15, Lopez roared back with an escape and three straight takedowns, then rode out Dominic Hargrove for the 11-9 win to give AU a 19-6 lead.
Gage Owen fell 9-2 to #28 Kaden Cassidy and Jack Nies dropped a tight match 21 to #23 DJ McGee, then Liam Packer was defeated by Erik Maag via technical fall. Despite losing the final three bouts, AU's lead held, and the Eagles took home a 19-17 win.
The victory gives AU their 10th of the season, marking their first double-digit win campaign since 2011.

The Eagles will face the #1 team in the country next Friday, Feb. 21, as they travel to University Park, Pa. for a matchup with Penn State. First bout is slated for 7:00 p.m.
