WASHINGTON - It came down to the final bout for American University wrestling in the Eagles' first dual win of the season, and heavyweight
Isaac Righter got the job done against Duke. It was a 22-18 victory in the end, and the first AU victory for first-year head coach
Jason Borrelli. AU later fell short in its second dual of the day, losing 27-13 to EIWA foe Hofstra.
Notable
- American won its first three bouts in its eventual victory over Duke that included six wins in total. The Eagles' lowest three weight classes won five of their six bouts in the two duals combined.
- Freshman Jack Maida (133), who got AU's only win vs. #12 Rutgers on Friday, made it a straight weekend sweep by earning two bonus-point wins on Sunday.
- Maida shut out Duke's Drake Doolittle for a 9-0 major decision and later pinned Hofstra's Ty Cymmerman in 1:54.
- Redshirt junior Tim Fitzpatrick (165) wrestled up two weight classes against Duke, competing against 184-pounder Vincent Baker and getting an impressive win by a score of 6-3 with three takedowns. Fitzpatrick later took Hofstra's Ricky Stamm to a second tiebreaker, getting one overtime takedown reversed by challenge, but fell 2-1 on a late escape by Stamm.
- Freshman Andy Fallon (125) trailed 2-0 early against Duke's Logan Agin but earned the final three points with escapes and riding time for a 3-2 victory to start AU off with a win in the early match.
- Another early win vs. Duke came from sophomore Ethan Szerencsits (141) who earned three takedowns against Patrick Rowland on his way to a 7-4 victory.
- American's lead was just 19-18 heading into the final bout against Duke, but heavyweight Issac Righter came up with a pair of takedowns and secured the Eagles' first dual victory of the season with a 5-2 decision against Jonah Niesenbaum.
- Freshman Max Leete (125) and redshirt junior Patrick Ryan (149) were winners in the Hofstra match along with Maida.
- Leete was tied 1-1 early in the third period against Jacob Moon, but a takedown and a point for riding time got him a 4-1 win.
- Ryan earned four takedowns on his way to a decisive, 10-2 major-decision victory over former AU teammate Michael Leandrou from Hofstra at 149 pounds.
