Hempstead, NY - Hofstra's three heavyweight wrestlers –
Charles Small,
Trey Rogers and
Zachary Knighton-Ward – earned hard-fought wins on the mat, but the Pride suffered a 27-13 defeat to visiting Buffalo from the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. Hofstra falls to 2-8 overall on the year following today's dual.
Small grinded out a 3-2 decision win through three overtime periods against Pete Acciardi. Small and Acciardi traded escape points throughout the match, despite Small nearly scoring several takedowns on Acciardi. After a scoreless sudden-victory overtime, Small escaped to his feet in the second overtime and scored eight seconds of riding time in the third overtime despite Acciardi escaping to neutral position.
Rogers earned the win by fall over Sam Mitchell in the third period. With the score tied at 1-1, Rogers scored two points with a takedown and had Mitchell flat on his back to score bonus points for the Pride. Knighton-Ward picked up his 11th win of the season with a dominating major decision win over Toby Cahill.
The Bulls (9-5) won the first seven matches of the afternoon before Small's thrilling decision win at 184 pounds. Buffalo also competed against LIU this afternoon and defeated the Sharks, 27-6.
The Pride's busy weekend will conclude on Sunday, January 16, against EIWA rival Navy. The match will take place at 4 p.m. from the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
