Lehigh Enjoys Successful Homecoming With 36-6 Triumph Over American

1/31/2025 10:12:00 PM | Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its first match inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall in more than two months, the Lehigh wrestling team dominated visiting American 36-6 on Takedown Cancer night, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Mountain Hawks won nine bouts, including the first six, scoring bonus points in six of those victories to snap a two-match losing streak and improve to 3-4 on the dual season.

For the second time in as many Grace Hall duals this season, junior Sheldon Seymour started things off with a fall, this time pinning American's Coen Bainey just 1:08 into the bout for his second pin of the season.

Four Mountain Hawks made their official Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall debuts Friday night, beginning with first-year Matty Lopes, who battled Raymond Lopez at 133. Lopes started fast with three first-period takedowns and narrowly missed a major decision after giving up a third period takedown before winning 15-8 to stake Lehigh to a 9-0 advantage.

Junior Carter Bailey kept things rolling with a 10-0 major decision over Cael McIntyre at 141. Bailey recorded takedowns in the first and third periods, plus a second period reversal, a stalling point, and some tough work on top that resulted in 4:44 of riding time advantage.

At 149, senior Malyke Hines followed Bailey with Lehigh's second straight major decision, a 12-4 win over Gage Owen. Like Lopes, Hines registered three first period takedowns and added a fourth in the second period.

First-year Logan Rozynski picked up his first career dual win with a 5-4 decision over Jack Nies at 157. Rozynski scored the only takedown of the bout in the first period and eventually used a 1:21 riding time advantage to come out ahead by a point. Rozynski's win gave Lehigh a 20-0 advantage at the midway point.

Coming out of the break, first-year Richie Grungo added his first career dual meet win, using a first period takedown, third period reversal and riding time to defeat Kaden Milheim 6-4 at 165.

American (7-8) picked up its lone win at 174 as Caleb Campos spoiled the Grace Hall debut of Rylan Rogers. The Lehigh sophomore led 8-6 late in the third when he was taken down, with Campos working Rogers to his back to secure the fall at 6:47.

Sophomore Caden Rogers steered the Mountain Hawks back onto the winning track with a 10-0 major decision over Lucas White at 184. Rogers scored 12 seconds into the bout and rode out from there. He also induced four stall calls against White, two on bottom in the first period and two on top in the second, which accounted for four points. A second period reversal and a third period escape helped officially clinch the dual for the Mountain Hawks.

Sixth-ranked senior Michael Beard racked up seven first-period takedowns in a 21-6 technical fall victory over Liam Volk-Klos at 197, with the match stopped at the 2:28 mark.

Graduate student heavyweight Owen Trephan closed the match with an 11-3 major decision over Will Jarrell. Trephan led 7-3 in the third period when he secured a late takedown and then rode out to move his riding time over the one minute mark. Trephan is now 14-0 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks are back home Saturday afternoon to face No. 24 Army West Point on Salute to Service, presented by Weis Markets. The match is set for a 2 p.m. start and tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com.

The 2024-25 Lehigh wrestling season is presented by the Historic Hotel Bethlehem.
