FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's wrestling team wrapped up the regular season on Sunday afternoon with a pair of EIWA conference losses to Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and LIU inside the William H. Pitt Center.
In the opening match, the Pioneers fell to VMI by a score of 23-18, despite holding an early 11-0 lead heading into the 165-pound matchup. Sacred Heart earned five of the 10 individual victories in the match. Notable performances included
Andrew Fallon's sudden victory at 141 pounds, as well as decision wins from
Felix Lettini at 157 and
Brendan Gilchrist at 285 pounds, respectively.
In the second match, the Pioneers evened the score at 3-3 after
Dakota Asuncion's decision victory over Thomas Bonasera at 149 pounds—his second win of the day. However, LIU surged ahead with three consecutive wins to take a 14-3 lead.
Owen Ayotte halted the run with a dominant 15-0 tech fall win at 184 pounds, but it wasn't enough, as Sacred Heart ultimately fell 29-10.
Braxton Fries-Appello closed out the match with his second win, earning a decision victory.
