Navy Wrestling Falls on the Road to No. 11 Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – The Navy wrestling team (1-3) drops road dual to 11th-ranked Iowa State (1-1), 29-9, in Ames, Iowa, on Friday night.

Iowa State won the first two matches (125 and 133 pounds) against the Mids to open up a 7-0 lead before ninth-ranked Josh Koderhandt (Sr / 141 / Belleville, Ill.) got Navy on the scoreboard with a 3-2 victory over Zach Redding. Koderhandt went into the third stanza down, 1-0, until a big reversal and riding time was the determining factor for the Mids first bout victory.

Navy would go on to win two of the next four bouts, including Jonathan Ley's (So / 157 / Miami, Fla.) first dual victory of the season as he defeated Kane Naaktgeboren, 4-2. Ley attacked early with a first period takedown and displayed solid defense as he only allowed points from an escape and a lock hands penalty. The Mids' final bout victory came at 174 pounds from 23rd-ranked Danny Wask (So / 174 / Wantage, N.J.) who executed a takedown in the first and second periods against Aiden Riggins for the 8-3 decision, cutting into the Cyclones lead, 17-9.

Iowa State finished the dual winning the remaining three bouts at 184, 197 and 285 pounds. In the lone ranked match of the night at 184 pounds, 30th-ranked Daniel Williams (So / 184 / Orlando, Fla.) went head-to-head against 16th-ranked Evan Bockman. Williams went into the third period down 5-3 but a Bockman takedown was the dagger in the 8-3 decision. It was Williams' fifth match against a ranked opponent this season and he holds a 2-3 record in those matches.

The Cyclones won five matches that resulted in bonus points (three tech falls and two majors).

What's Ahead

Navy will close out the first month of the season when it plays hosts the 46th annual Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 23.
