Early Lead Holds for Wrestling in a 25-13 Dual Win over Buffalo

WASHINGTON - Six individual wins including three bonus-point victories sealed up a 25-13 team win for American University wrestling over the Bulls of the University at Buffalo. The Eagles jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the team scoring and held on to win their third straight dual, improving to 4-2.

Notable
  • The Eagles got six points from a Raymond Lopez pin (133), and five each from Caleb Campos (174) and Will Jarrell (HWT) who each won by technical fall.
  • American led from the first bout all the way through, starting off with a sudden-victory decision for Coen Bainey at 125 pounds.
  • Bainey tied it up 1-1 in the third period with an escape, and got the only takedown of the match in sudden victory overtime.
  • In the second bout at 133, Lopez wasted no time in jumping out to a 6-1 lead and then quickly pinning Michael Giugliano in a minute and 50 seconds to put AU up 9-0.
  • At 141 pounds, Cael McIntyre trailed early but a third-period takedown lifted him to an 8-5 win and prevented OT as his opponent scored a point for riding time.
  • Gage Owen put up a strong fight at 149 but lost 6-4 despite getting the riding time point.
  • There was another exciting match at 165, as Kaden Milheim and Hunter Shaut of Buffalo were tied 0-0 until the final 50 seconds. Milheim got an escape and Shaut got riding time, leaving them tied 1-1 at the end of three. Similar to the match at 125, Milheim scored the first and only takedown for a 4-1 sudden-victory decision.
  • Campos ran away with it at 174 pounds, leading 7-0 after the first period and going on to win by 19-2 technical fall with four takedowns in all.
  • After the win for Campos, American led 20-7 with three bouts to go. The Bulls narrowly won by decision at 184 over Hunter Hohman with a score of 2-0, and then Liam Volk-Klos came up with enough defense to prevent extra points for Buffalo at 197 in a 12-5 loss.
  • With the team win wrapped up, Will Jarrell put a bow on it for the Eagles with a clean sheet at heavyweight, winning by 16-0 tech fall in 6:19. Jarrell scored three takedowns and got four near fall points, finally ending it on a stall call for Buffalo.
  • It's the third straight win for American, who now stands at 2-1 at home in Bender Arena this season.
