Mids Drop Non-Conference Matchup Versus Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Navy wrestling team (3-6, 2-1) fell behind early in its dual versus Lock Haven (5-6, 3-1) on Friday in Lock Haven, Pa. The Mids found themselves down 19-0 through the first five bouts and weren't able to mount a comeback, falling to the Bald Eagles 24-17. Lock Haven claimed victories at 149, 157, 165, 174, 184 and 125-pounds, while Navy won at 197, 285, 133 and 141, claiming five bonus points in the dual on a fall and tech fall victory.

The contest began with a close battle at 149-pounds between James Latona and Nick Stonecheck. Latona led 1-0 heading into the third period but Stonecheck got on the board with 1:44 remaining on a reversal to go up 2-1. Latona tied the match with an escape with 14 seconds left but Stonecheck scored a bonus point with riding time to win the match by a 3-2 decision.

Navy fell behind 8-0 after Lock Haven won the 157-pound bout by tech fall and needed a win from Val Park to avoid falling behind by double digits. Park trailed 4-2 to 32nd-ranked Avery Bassett in the second period after Bassett scored a takedown but Park got back within a point with an escape before the end of the period. Park forced sudden victory after winning riding time to make the score 4-4 but was called for an illegal move in the overtime period, awarding the winning point to Bassett for a 5-4 decision. Lock Haven was deducted a team point for control of the mat during the bout, making the score 10-0.

The Bald Eagles then put the Mids in a 19-0 hole at the halfway mark with a decision win at 174 and a fall win at 184-pounds but Jacob Koser earned Navy points with a big victory after the intermission break. Navy's team captain scored a takedown on Brad Morrison just 10 seconds into the contest and never let up to eventually win by fall (1:56) to earn Navy six points.

The second match to go into sudden victory was the heavyweight battle between 19th-ranked Grady Griess and Isaac Reid. Both wrestlers scored a point on escapes in regulation, sending the match into sudden victory tied 1-1. Griess patiently waited to make his move and scored a takedown with just two seconds left in sudden victory to win the match by a 3-1 decision to make the score 19-9.

Although Lock Haven clinched the dual with a tech fall win at 125-pounds to go up 24-9, Navy ended the night strong with a pair of wins from 31st-ranked Brendan Ferretti and 30th-ranked Josh Koderhandt.

Ferretti took a 4-1 lead with two takedowns on 33rd-ranked Gable Strickland in the first period but Strickland earned two points on a pair of escapes to make the score 4-3 heading into the third period. Although Strickland was close to near fall points late in the match, Ferretti prevented him from scoring and clinched the match with an escape with 10 seconds to go to win by a 5-3 decision.

Koderhandt had his way with Ty Linsenbigler, winning by a 16-1 tech fall (5:18). He ended the match with a pair of four-point near falls, as well as two takedowns and a reversal to claim the final match of the night for Navy.

Griess won his fourth dual match in a row and now stands at 26-4 overall with a 7-1 dual record. His victory over Reid is the 45th of his career and the first ever in overtime. Ferretti also won his fourth straight dual, improving to 6-2 in dual matches and 18-6 overall. The freshman also won his first career match over an Intermat ranked opponent. Koderhandt earned his sixth career win by technical fall for his third straight win and is now 21-9 overall with a 5-4 dual record. Koser won his 25th career dual match and 16th match by fall, putting him one win away from 75 all-time.
