Wisconsin, Michigan State Get Past Wrestlers as Early-Season Big Ten Run Continues

December 04, 2022 | Wrestling

In the second and third of four consecutive dual matches against Big Ten teams to start the Princeton wrestling team's season, Wisconsin and Michigan State dealt the Tigers defeats Sunday afternoon at the Garden State Grapple at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Kole Mulhauser had a win at 174 as No. 11-ranked Wisconsin took a 38-3 win over the Tigers to start the doubleheader as the Badgers sent eight Intermat top-20 wrestlers to the mat.

Wisconsin opened with a win by forfeit at 125 and though Sean Pierson rallied for the Tigers at 133 against No. 16-ranked Taylor LaMont to get to within 5-3 with a second-period takedown and cut it to 5-4 with a third-period escape, LaMont added the riding-time point for the decision win. LaMont built a 5-0 lead on two takedowns and an escape over the first two periods.

No. 19-ranked Joe Zargo had six takedowns on his way to a 14-4 major-decision win over Danny Coles at 141, and the Badgers' No. 2-ranked Austin Gomez had four takedowns before finishing his win with a pin in 4:36 against Tiger rookie Rocco Camillaci at 149 to grow the lead to 19-0.

At 157, Drew Lang had an early takedown against Wisconsin's No. 14-ranked Garrett Model, but those were the only points Model allowed in an 18-2 tech-fall win in 4:34. No. 5-ranked Dean Hamiti at 165 extended Wisconsin's winning run to six to start the bout, getting a 13-5 major-decision win over Blaine Bergey at 165. Hamiti scored the first five points of the match on a pair of takedowns and an escape over the first two periods before Bergey pulled within two at 5-3 with a takedown and an escape of his own late in the second, but Hamiti allowed only a pair of points on escapes the rest of the way while scoring eight points of his own with six of those coming on three takedowns.

Mulhauser then had Princeton's win at 174 over Josh Otto, getting out to a 3-0 lead on an escape and a takedown, both in the second period, and allowed Otto just a two points on escapes before countering that with a riding-time point in the 4-2 win.

Wisconsin closed out the match with three wins, though two came by a point apiece. The first of those was at 184, where Wisconsin's Tyler Dow needed the riding-time point to hold off Nate Dugan. Dow built a 4-2 lead after a period on a pair of takedowns and then pushed it to 5-2 with an escape off the second-period start. Dugan rallied with an escape and then a takedown late in the third, but with the riding-time point in hand, Dow had the 6-5 win.

At 197, Princeton's No. 19-ranked Luke Stout took No. 20 Braxton Amos to sudden-victory overtime before a takedown got Amos a 3-1 win. Stout opened the scoring with a second-period escape, but Amos tied it with an escape in the first minute of the third as regulation time finished in a 1-1 tie.

Wisconsin's No. 11-ranked Trent Hillger closed out the bout with a 10-1 major-decision win over Princeton's No. 27-ranked Matt Cover at heavyweight, scoring the first nine points of the match before Cover opened the third period with an escape.

Princeton had four wins against Michigan State, including three over InterMat-ranked wrestlers, but the Spartans held off the Tigers 21-15 in a contest that went down to extra time in the final bout.

Michigan State started with six points on the forfeit at 125 and followed that with three wins by decision. At 133, No. 8-ranked Rayvon Foley got out to a 5-0 second-period lead on two takedowns and an escape, and though Pierson got to within 7-5 on an early third-period reversal, Foley scored four of the match's last five points, including the riding-time point.

At 141, MSU's Jordan Hamdan responded to a first-minute Coles takedown with seven straight points to lead 7-2 early in the third on the way to an 11-4 win that included four takedowns. At 149, an escape off the third-period start was decisive for MSU's Peyton Omania in a 3-2 win over Camillaci. Camillaci had a pair of second-period escapes around a Hamdan takedown to stand tied at 2-2 entering the third.

Princeton's first win against the Spartans came at 157, where No. 1-ranked Quincy Monday kept MSU's No. 15 Chase Saldate off the board in a 5-0 win. Monday got four points on a second-period near fall and closed with an escape.

Princeton continued what became a run of three wins in four matches with a win for Bergey at 165 over MSU's No. 32-ranked Caleb Fish, 6-4 in sudden-victory overtime. The wrestlers matched each other with an escape and a takedown in the second period, Bergey's first before Fish tied it at 3-3 entering the third. It was tied at 4-4 after a Fish escape and then a technical violation that awarded a point to Bergey, and then Bergey had the decisive takedown 32 seconds into sudden-victory overtime.

Mulhauser made it 2-for-2 on the day with a 15-0 tech-fall win against Lucas Daly that saw Mulhauser reach the 15-point margin on the riding-time point after three takedowns, a four-point near-fall, an escape and a point awarded to him for stalling calls on Daly.

Mulhauser's win brought Princeton within 15-11, but MSU's No. 16-ranked Layne Malczewski picked up an 8-4 win over Dugan at 184 to push the Spartans' lead back to seven. Malczewski had a first-minute takedown, and though Dugan responded with a reversal and a takedown in the second period to pull ahead 4-3, the last five points of the match went to Malczewski on a takedown, two escapes and the riding-time point.

Stout's 11-3 win at 197 over No. 17 Cameron Caffey came with a bonus point that cut the MSU lead to three heading into the heavyweight bout. Stout scored the first six and eight of the first nine points of the match on two takedowns, a reversal and a near fall, leading 8-2 headed for the third. Another takedown and the riding-time point turned Stout's win into a major decision.

A back-and-forth match saw MSU's Ryan Vasbinder win 8-6 over Cover in sudden-victory overtime to clinch the match for the Spartans. After being tied at 5-5 after a period as the wrestlers matched each other with a takedown, a reversal and an escape each, a sequence that saw three lead changes, Cover took a 6-5 lead on a second-period escape. Vasbinder then matched that with an escape off the start of the third period to enter sudden-victory OT tied at 6-6, and 1:02 into that extra time, Vasbinder had the winning takedown.

Princeton will close its early season Big Ten run with a visit from Rutgers, ranked No. 19 in the latest NWCA poll, next Sunday at 2 p.m. in Jadwin Gym. Tickets are available here.
