PHILADELPHIA – No. 22 Lehigh started fast, winning the first four bouts to take a 16-0 lead and then held off a late Penn charge to defeat the Quakers 22-12 Thursday night at the Palestra. Penn followed Lehigh's winning streak by taking three straight bouts, but a tough 10-4 decision by first-year Richie Grungo at 165 gave Lehigh the cushion it needed to defeat Penn for the second straight season.
The Mountain Hawks won six of the 10 bouts overall to improve to 6-4 on the dual season.
The dual began at 197 with Lehigh's two top-six upperweights setting the tone with back-to-back technical falls. Senior Michael Beard secured a 22-5 technical fall over Josh LaBarbera in the second period at 197 and then graduate student Owen Trephan broke open a 6-2 match with a big third period in a 22-6 tech fall over Matthew Cruise at 285 to give the Mountain Hawks a 10-0 lead after two bouts.
Lehigh made it three consecutive wins at 125 as junior Sheldon Seymour converted a double leg shot with just under a minute remaining in the third period to defeat Max Gallagher 4-1 in a battle of ranked wrestlers.
A 4-0 run was capped by first-year Matty Lopes at 133, who used a second period takedown and some crafty defending in the third to knock off Ryan Miller 4-3, giving Lehigh a 16-0 advantage.
Lehigh nearly broke the dual open at 141 with junior Carter Bailey taking ninth-ranked CJ Composto to his back for seven points in the first period, but despite working hard on top, Bailey was unable to secure the fall. Composto battled back with a pair of second period takedowns and one more in the third, and held Bailey down to win 10-9, getting Penn on the scoreboard.
A high-scoring bout followed at 149. Senior Malyke Hines scored the first takedown in his match with Cross Wasilewski and reclaimed a 7-6 lead with a third period reversal, but Wasilewski escaped to force overtime. In sudden victory, Wasilewski secured a takedown to win 10-7, giving the Quakers a second straight victory.
The third meeting this season between first-year Logan Rozynski and Penn's Jude Swisher at 157 saw Rozynski score the first takedown with Swisher battling back to lead 5-3 after one period. A third period takedown created separation for Swisher, who claimed a 10-6 decision to bring the Quakers within 16-9 with three bouts remaining.
Grungo took on Andy Troczynski at 165 and scored a second period takedown off a double leg shot to lead 3-2 after two periods. In the third, Grungo added two more takedowns on the way to the 10-4 win, which put Lehigh up by 10 with two bouts remaining.
Penn's Nick Incontrera scored a third period takedown to edge sophomore Rylan Rogers 4-1 at 174.
Sophomore Caden Rogers claimed the final bout of the night, defeating No. 20 Maximus Hale 2-1 at 184 behind a second period stalling point and a third period escape.
The Mountain Hawks will close out the dual season on Friday, Feb. 21 when they welcome Arizona State to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a 7 p.m. match. Lehigh will honor its five-member senior class prior to the match. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.
