Mids Crown Four Champions, Place Third at Navy Classic

Tyler Hunt (141 / So / Calhoun, Ga.), David Key (184 / So / Norcross, Ga.), Jacob Koser (197 / Jr / Dillsburg, Pa.) and Riley Smith (285 / Sr / Mason, Mich.) stood atop the podium as individual champions at their respective weight classes to lead the Navy wrestling team to a third-place finish at the 12-team Navy Classic held Saturday at Wesley Brown Field House.

Michigan State, who won the tournament by 3.5 points over Ohio and 7 points over Navy, has now won the Navy Classic team title twice (2018, 2021) in the last three times the tournament has been held (no tournament held in 2020). Going into today's competition, a different team had won the tournament crown in each of the previous eight tournaments - 2012 Kent State, 2013 Wisconsin, 2014 Chattanooga, 2015 Princeton, 2016 Indiana, 2017 Navy, 2018 Michigan State, 2019 Virginia Tech, 2020 No tournament due to COVID.

Navy led the way with four individual champions, while Michigan State and Ohio each had two and Bucknell and Lock Haven had one apiece. Michigan State and Ohio both place 10 wrestlers among the top six, while Navy had 9.

All four wrestlers are first-time Navy Classic champions, while Koser has been crowned the 197-pound champion in two of the three tournaments in which he's wrestled this season. Hunt, Key and Smith, meanwhile, are all first-time champions as collegians.

In addition to Navy's four champions, Josh Koderhandt (133 / Fr / Belleville, Ill.) placed second, Grady Griess (285 / So / Grand Island, Neb.) took third,  Shane Finney (Sr / 174 / Carlsbad, Calif.) and Cael Crebs (Fr / 174 / Montoursville, Pa.) tied for third in the same weight class and Val Park (165 / Jr / Edmond, Okla.) finished in the fifth/sixth-place match.

The Highlights
• 18 wrestlers competed for the Mids with 9 placing among the top six in their respective weight classes.
• Just 5 of the 18 wrestlers who represented Navy in the tournament had previously seen action in the Navy Classic (PJ Crane 0-2 in 2019 ,Hunter Johns 0-2 in 2019, Jacob Koser 4-1/3rd place in 2019, Val Park 2-2 in 2019 and Riley Smith 0-2 in 2018 and 2019).
• Having battled injuries during the young season, Saturday's Navy Classic marked the first appearance this fall for Tyler Hunt.
• Navy has won a combined 9 individual titles in its 3 tournaments to date - 3 at the Clarion Open (Koderhandt, Cerniglia, Koser), 2 at the Bearcat Open (Allen, Cerniglia) and 4 at the Navy Classic (Hunt, Key, Koser, Smith).

What's Ahead
• The Midshipmen will step away from the mat for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational slated for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4.
