No. 20 Princeton Closes Strong to Defeat Rider, 33-7

February 06, 2022 | Wrestling

Winning the last seven matches and eight on the day, with five of those wins coming with bonus points, the No. 20-ranked Princeton wrestling team was a 33-7 winner at Rider on Sunday, taking its third straight win in the series.

Princeton can aim for the sweep of the two other Division I New Jersey-based programs, a feat it achieved the last season Princeton competed in 2020, with a visit to Rutgers on Feb. 18 in what will be the team's dual-match finale.

Princeton opened with a win from No. 1-ranked Patrick Glory, extending Glory's win streak to 34 straight over the past two competitive seasons. Glory was a 15-3 winner over Tyler Klinsky, using a big second period to pull away after entering that frame with a 2-0 lead. In the second, Glory had two takedowns and a four-point near fall to help extend his lead to 12-2 heading to the third.

Rider's wins came at 133 and 141, giving the Broncs a 7-4 lead. No. 31-ranked Richie Koehler had the win for Rider at 133, rallying with a third-period reversal after Spellman had taken a 3-2 lead into the third with the help of a reversal of his own in the second.

At 141, No. 29-ranked Quinn Kinner was a 15-2 winner over Danny Coles, with Kinner building a 10-0 lead in the first on a takedown and a pair of four-point near falls. Coles got on the board in the second with a takedown, but Kinner answered that later in the period with a takedown of his own on the way to the bonus-point win.

At 149, Princeton began a winning streak that endured through the rest of the match. Marshall Keller was a 5-2 winner over Cole McComas, answering a McComas early takedown with one of his own later in the first and adding a pair of escape points over the first two periods along with the riding-time point to secure the win.

WIth the match tied at 7-7, Princeton's No. 8-ranked Quincy Monday gave the Tigers the lead, and the rest of the lineup made it grow. Monday had a pair of first-period takedowns to build a 4-1 lead on Alec Bobchin after a period on the way to his 7-2 win.

Marshall Keller followed with a bonus-point win at 165, using a pair of first-period takedowns to lead 4-2 over Michael Wilson after that opening period. Keller then grew the lead on the help of three takedowns over the final two periods on the way to a 14-5 win that pushed princeton's lead to 14-7.

At 174, Nate Dugan followed the pattern of Tigers setting the tone with early takedowns, getting two in teh first period and three more over the last two periods on the way to a 12-7 win over Shane Reitsma and pushing Princeton's lead to 17-7.

At 184 and 197, Princeton's No. 22-ranked Travis Stefanik and No. 17 Luke Stout each won by fall, with Stefanik getting his against Evan Vazquez in 1:30 and Stout getting his over Azeem Bell in 3:32. Those 12 points lifted Princeton's lead to 29-7, and both game in matches where the Tiger wrestlers had the edge in score, Stefanik on a takedown to lead 2-0 and Stout on a pair of first-period takedowns before adding a second-period reversal on the way to a 6-1 lead.

The last match of the day was also the highest-scoring match of the day, as Matt Cover was a 19-7 winner over David Szuba. Cover had a takedown, a reversal and a four-point near fall in the first period to build an 8-3 lead three minutes in, and then did more of the same in the second, using a takedown and another four-point near fall to help push the lead to 15-4 entering the third.

Princeton will have two matches next weekend, heading to No. 14 Lehigh on Friday night before hosting Penn in the Ivy League finale on Saturday afternoon in Dillon Gym.
