Six Reach The Podium As Wrestling Takes Fifth At Southern Scuffle

1/2/2022 7:33:00 AM

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Cornell had six wrestlers reach the podium with both Jonathan Loew (184) and Lewis Fernandes (285) reaching the finals as the Big Red took fifth as a team at the Southern Scuffle after Sunday's final rounds at McKenzie Arena. The Big Red's 85 team points was just 0.5 points out of fourth and represented the 14th top 10 finish in 14 all-time appearances at the event.

Loew and Fernandes were the team's top finishers, both going 4-1 during the two-day event. Loew earned a dominant 10-2 major decision over No. 29 Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota in the semifinals, but was stopped in the championship match by Maryland's 32nd-ranked Kyle Cochran, who defeated both of the top two seed on his way to the title. Loew scored the first points of the finals match on a second period escape, but Cochran evened it up in the third with an escape, picked up a takedown and a rideout and picked up the riding time point for a 4-1 victory.

Fernandes dominated Iowa's Aaron Costello by major decision in the semifinals by a 9-0 margin, his third bonus point win of the tournament, but was upended by Air Force's Wyatt Hendrickson in the final match. Seventh-ranked Hendrickson picked up a six-point takedown to the sophomore's back early in the first, then squared off Fernandes for the pin. The loss did not diminish a tournament that saw him earn bonus points in wins over wrestlers from Missouri, Oklahoma State and Iowa.

Hunter Richard was fourth at 157 pounds with an impressive 5-2 weekend that included a 6-4 consolation semifinal win over two-time All-American Brock Mauller of Missouri. He wasn't able to top 23rd-ranked Jarrett Jacques in the placement match, falling 8-6.

Both Greg Diakomihalis and Andrew Berreyesa (174) finished tournament runs in seventh place. Diakomihalis avenged one of his two losses with a sudden victory takedown of Virginia Tech's Eddie Ventresca to place seventh, while Berreyesa won four straight matched in the back draw with bonus points after losing in the first round to eventual champion Cade Devos of South Dakota State by a narrow 6-2 margin.

Josh Saunders (141) took eighth after medically forfeiting out of the tournament following his 6-3 consolation win over Maryland's Ethen Miller to finish on the podium.

Dom LaJoie finished one match away from gaining a spot on the podium after suffering a 7-3 loss to Appalachian State's Ethan Oakey in the round of 12.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Jonathan Loew (184) and Lewis Fernandes (285) both advanced to the semifinals and eight wrestlers are still alive for the podium as day one of the Southern Scuffle ended with Cornell in fifth place. The Big Red surged after sitting as low as 13th early in the day.

Loew took out wrestlers from Virginia Tech, Missouri and Oklahoma State by decision, including an 8-2 quarterfinal victory over OSU's Gavin Stika to reach the semis, where he'll take on #29 Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota on Sunday.

Fernandes path to Sunday's matchup with Iowa's Aaron Costello began with a pair of wins by fall, knocking off Missouri's Seth Nitzel at the 4:00 mark, then needing just19 seconds to drop Oklahoma State's Konner Doucet. He picked up an 8-2 triumph over Michael McAleavey of the Citadel in the quarters to reach Sunday morning's round of four.

Joining the duo on the podium will be freshman Greg Diakomihalis at 125. He rebounded from a second round loss to capture two victories in the back draw and picked up a medical forfeit to send him to the consolation quarterfinals.

The rest of the Big Red competitors need a win on Sunday morning to earn a spot on the podium, with the most interesting matchup pitting teammates at 157 where Hunter Richard and Adam Santoro will meet.

Richard earned a pair of wins over wrestlers from Penn State and NC State in the championship draw before losing a narrow 8-6 decision to #23 Jarrett Jaccques of Missouri. Santoro went 3-1 on Saturday, winning a pair of contests in the back draw, including a win by fall.

Also still alive on Sunday are Dom LaJoie (133), Josh Saunders (141) and Andrew Berreyesa (174).

LaJoie was 2-1 on the day, dropping a decision to Michigan State's 11th-ranked Rayvon Foley to fall back into the consolation draw. He opened the tournament with consecutive 2-0 wins over wrestlers from Chattanooga and Missouri.

After losing a narrow 4-3 decision in the first round to Jordan Hamdan of Michigan State, Saunders rebounded with three straight victories, including an 8-0 major decision win over teammate JJ Wilson. A fourth consecutive win would put him into the medal matches, but he'll need to get past Maryland's Ethen Miller first.

Berreyesa also followed up a first round loss with three straight victories, all coming with bonus points attached and two vs. wrestlers from Buffalo. He'll face Riley Habisch of North Dakota State for his spot in the medal matches.

Also competing but not advancing were Phillip Moomey (133), JJ Wilson (141), Benny Baker (165), Payton Craft (174), Nathan Thacker (184) and Brendan Furman (285). Furman and Wilson won their first round matches, while Craft earned a triumph in the back draw before being eliminated.
