NEW YORK – Nick Babin, HM/27
Matt Kazimir and 22/17
Joshua Ogunsanya posted wins in their bouts, but the Lions fell, 23-12 in a close contest with the No. 13 Oklahoma State Cowboys on Sunday afternoon in Levien Gym.
"I thought we wrestled really well overall," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling
Zach Tanelli said. We came up short on a couple of (bouts), but it's more about ourselves. It is more about how we are competing. I think we showed a lot today about who our team is and what we are about. I am excited to move forward as we have some other tests."
Babin (125) got the afternoon started with an upset decision win over OSU's 13/16 Trevor Mastrogiovanni. The win gave the Lions an early 3-0 lead.
HM/32
Angelo Rini followed in the 133 bout with a 6-1 decision loss to 2/2 Daton Fix as the Cowboys tied the match, 3-3.
HM/27 Kazimir stepped on the mat next for the 141 bout. He won by fall (3:43) over 19/25 Carter Young to reclaim the lead for the Lions.
"Matt is one of the best kids in the country," Tanelli said. "We are figuring a couple of things out, as many people are right now, so it's exciting for him to have another marquee win. It's nice to see him looking the way we know he should."
Danny Fongaro (149) dropped a 7-3 decision to OSU's HM/19 Victor Voinovich. HM/27
Cesar Alvan then lost a tight 4-1 decision to 13/13 Kaden Gfeller.
22/17 Ogunsanya secured the last win of the afternoon for the Lions in the 165 bout. He over-powered 20/22 Wyatt Sheets to prevail in a 10-4 decision win.
HM/32
Lennox Wolak (174) dropped a 6-2 decision to 2/6 Dustin Plott.
Aaron Ayzerov followed by losing a 9-3 decision to 12/13 Travis Wittlake.
Javen Jovero lost on a tech fall, 21-6 to HM/21 Luke Surber.
Danny Conley ended the day by dropping a tight 1-0 decision to HM/26 Konner Doucet in the 285 bout.
"We are out here to win every match and every dual that we can," Tanelli said. With that being said, it's about a lot more than that. I am really happy to be able to give the fans something in our gym at home in New York City, so we have four or five other national-ranked teams coming in. Hopefully we can put on a show and pull one of these out."
