MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Bucknell wrestling team faced a tall task against an eighth-ranked Minnesota team that sent out six competitors ranked in the top-11 nationally, and the Golden Gophers prevailed 35-3 in their home opener on Friday night at Maturi Pavilion. No. 27 Myles Takats came from behind to upset No. 16 Clayton Whiting 11-9 at 174 pounds for Bucknell's lone win of the night. Dylan Chappell turned in another of the top performances of the night for the Bison (2-2), falling in sudden victory to returning All-American and fifth-ranked Vance VomBaur at 141 pounds.
After the Bison had to forfeit the 125-pound bout, Minnesota took control of the dual by winning a pair of ranked battles at 133 and 141. No. 8 Tyler Wells defeated No. 15 Kurt Phipps 8-2 at 133, avenging a 5-3 loss to Phipps in the first round of last year's NCAA Championships in Kansas City. Phipps led 1-0 heading into the third period but Wells won it with a seven-point move, scoring a takedown and four back points.
Chappell scored a first-period takedown against VomBaur, who finished eighth at NCAAs last March despite being seeded 26th. VomBaur returned the favor with a takedown in the third period, and Chappell's escape sent the match to sudden victory tied at 5-5. Chappell went in for a shot but was turned back, and VomBaur quickly grabbed a leg and scored the winning takedown.
Braden Bower came up with a third-period reversal to save a bonus point against Drew Roberts at 149. Minnesota (1-0) went up 23-0 after a decision from No. 7 Tommy Askey and a tech fall from No. 10 Andrew Sparks, but Takats put the Bison on the board with a thriller at 174 pounds.
Whiting, a Missouri transfer who went 10-3 for the Tigers last season, stormed out to a 6-2 lead midway through the second period. Takats used an escape and a takedown to tie the bout at 6-6 after two, but Whiting started the third period with a reversal to go back in front. Takats escaped and took Whiting down to go up 10-8, and he went on to win with riding time 11-9.
No. 11 Max McEnelly followed with a tech fall at 184. No. 8 Isaiah Salazar, who finished sixth at 184 at NCAAs last year, earned bonus points with a major decision at 197, and No. 23 Bennett Tabor finished the dual with an 8-3 win in the heavyweight bout.
Bucknell is now 2-2 on the season with both losses coming to Big Ten foes in Maryland and Minnesota. The Bison will head to Annapolis for the Navy Classic next Saturday before facing yet another Big Ten squad when Wisconsin visits Davis Gym on Dec. 7.
