The Dragons Fall at No.11 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – Brian Bonino won late in the third period but it was not enough as Drexel fell to No. 11 Wisconsin, 37-3 on Sunday afternoon. Coming into the dual, the Badgers were individually ranked in eight of ten weight classes.
The Dragons found themselves in a hole early with a loss at 125 lbs. In the next match at 133lbs, Kyle Waterman fought against No. 19 Taylor LaMont. The match was tied at three going into the final period but LaMont took down Waterman to claim a 7-4 decision.
Luke Nichter surprised No. 2 Austin Gomez and scored six points in the first minute after a throw and four back points on a near fall. After a reversal by Gomez, Nichter escaped getting back to neutral. Nichter was unable to keep his lead as Gomez earned a take down and pinned the Dragon late in the first period. Wisconsin won the next two matches to put the Dragons in a 25-point deficit.
At 174 lbs, Cody Walsh started off strong with an early takedown. He was unable to keep the momentum in favor of DU as Otto scored two takedowns in the period and was victorious in a 10-6 decision. Next up was Bonino, who provided a much-needed spark for the Dragons. His match was scoreless until he earned an escape point to give him a 1-0 lead in the middle period. After Dow choose to start on the bottom, he earned an escape and tied the contest at one. With six seconds left in the match, Bonino caught Dow on one leg and took him down to score two points and win a 3-1 decision. After the victory, the Dragons were down 28-3 with two weight classes to go.
Unfortunately, the Badgers continued their success as they claimed major decisions at 197 and 285 to close out the dual.
Up Next:
The Dragons are back in action next week as they head to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Purdue Duals on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Wrestling is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
