Wrestling Battles Against No. 20 Stanford on Homecoming Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - Jordan Soriano upset #28 Jason Miranda by fall in the first period but it was not enough as Drexel fell to Stanford, 34-6, on Sunday evening in the DAC. The Dragons close out its non-conference schedule and look forward to the remaining EIWA matches.

Starting at 125lbs, Desmond Pleasant battled with #12 Nico Provo. The redshirt-sophomore earned a takedown to go up 5-3 with thirty seconds to go at the end of the second period. The Cardinal was able to escape to cut Pleasant's lead to one early in the final frame. Seconds later, #12 Provo took down the Dragon and gave Stanford its first win, by decision, 8-6. Jaxon Maroney took the mat next for Drexel. The bout was scoreless through the opening three minutes. Maroney started the second frame on bottom and rolled his way through for a reversal and a 2-1 lead into the final period, up 2-1. He was unable to maintain the advantage and fell 9-2, after a takedown and four near fall points by Stanford.

At 141lbs, Jordan Soriano took on #28 Jason Miranda. Soriano started out strong as he took the first shot just seconds in to the bout but was not able to score and the ref called a stalemate. On the restart, Miranda was close to a takedown but Soriano held him off and earned a takedown himself. The sophomore caught #28 Miranda on his back and pinned the Cardinal in an upset victory. After three matches, Soriano knotted the team score at 6 all.

Following the media timeout, Stanford claimed wins at 149lbs and 157lbs by bonus points and took a 15-6 advantage. Cody Walsh and Jasiah Queen kept their bouts within five points with two minutes to go but Stanford pulled away and continued their run.

At 184 pounds, Justin Griffith competed against Jack Darrah. The match saw little offense and was scoreless until the true freshman took a 1-0 lead in the second period on a locking hands violation by Stanford. Darrah escaped after taking bottom to start the third period and both wrestlers held strong as neither opponent scored after the violation. Ultimately, the Cardinal took the match, 2-1, as he was awarded a riding time point.

Stanford's took the next match by technical fall at 197 pounds. Santino Morina was the final wrestler to take the mat for DU in the bout. Stanford's Peter Ming earned over a minute in riding time but Morina earned an escape to go up by one after two frames. The redshirt-senior mat-returned the Cardinal early in the third period but was unable to pick-up the pin or near fall points. Ming scored on a takedown with 20 seconds left to win by decision, 4-1.
