
Dragons Fall Short to No. 17 South Dakota State, 25-10

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel wrestling team fell to No. 17 South Dakota State Saturday night in Philadelphia, 25-10. Luke Nichter, Cody Walsh, and Giuseppe Hoose were all victorious. The Dragons are now 2-5 in duals this season, with four defeats coming via ranked opponents.
Luke Nichter got the Dragons on the board at 157 pounds. Nichter opened the first period against Moses Espinoza-Owens strong, securing the takedown and adding four near-fall points to the 7-0 advantage. The Chambersburg, Pa. native recorded a takedown in the final six seconds after the stalemate to extend the lead to 10-0. Espinoza-Owens managed a takedown in the closing moments of the third but Nichter cruised to a 12-3 major decision win.
The Dragons earned back-to-back victories after Cody Walsh added three more points at 165 pounds. Walsh worked over Marcus Espinoza-Owens in the first two minutes of the bout, eventually getting a takedown before going out of bounds. Espinoza-Owens managed an escape point to end the first at 3-1. An escape point in the opening seconds of the third was enough as Walsh defeated Espinoza-Owens by a 4-3 decision.
At 184, Giuseppe Hoose picked up a comeback win over Brock Fettig. Fettig took Hoose down for three points in the first half of the opening period. Hoose was quickly able to escape, ending the first down 3-1. Hoose trailed 4-2 with nearly a minute left in the bout. The graduate student broke a leg lock from Fettig and went on offense. Giuseppe collected the takedown on the way to a 5-4 decision.
Shane Whitney made his dual debut for Drexel at 285 pounds. He fell by technical fall to No. 26 Luke Rasmussen, 18-3.
