BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Binghamton opened its dual season in style with a 26-12 win over Long Island University Sunday at Pratt Recreation Center.
In the first meeting between the two programs since they joined the EIWA's Independence Division earlier this season, the Bearcats secured four bonus-point victories, including two technical falls and one pin. Binghamton has now won all five of its duals against the Sharks since LIU unified its Brooklyn and Post athletic programs in 2019.
With the win, Binghamton Head Coach
Kyle Borshoff now has the third-most dual victories in program history at 47, passing Mark Gumble. Borshoff now only trails Steve Erber (152) and Pat Popolizio (81) on the program's all-time wins list.
"Overall, we wrestled tough against LIU," said Borshoff. "Great win from
Cayden Bevis and
Carson Wagner, who defeated guys that had previously beaten them. Our older leadership did a nice job picking up bonus-point wins. We lost a couple of positions that we need to improve on before next weekend, but I am very happy to get today's win against a tough conference opponent."
Highlights
- In his first appearance since finishing fifth at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational, Brevin Cassella carried his momentum into the dual by going on the attack early and often against Corey Connolly. Cassella posted his third technical fall of the season, defeating Connolly 17-1 to open the dual for the Bearcats.
- After several close calls throughout the year, Wagner finally earned his first ranked win of the season Sunday against No. 32 Robbie Sagaris. The sophomore pinned Sagaris in 48 seconds after getting a quick takedown before finishing the match with the fall. It is Wagner's first pin of his collegiate career.
- Cory Day dominated in his 18-0 technical fall against Chris Powell. It marked Day's first technical fall of the season.
- In his first dual match of the season, Bevis scored a takedown with about 10 seconds remaining to defeat John Dusza 6-3.
