WASHINGTON - Early match results were exciting for American University wrestling, but the Eagles couldn't hold on to the momentum and lost 31-12 against Maryland at Bender Arena on Saturday night. American will be back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting #19 Penn for Senior Day.

Notable 

• Freshman Max Leete (125 pounds) held an early 6-0 lead and had it up to 9-0 before pinning Maryland's Zach Spence in 4:09. It was the fifth pin of the season for Leete, who improved to 16-6 overall and 6-2 in duals.
• Trailing 3-1 in the third period, freshman Jack Maida earned a bigtime victory over the Terps' King Sandoval at 133 pounds. Maida got the escape and an immediate takedown to take a 4-3 lead, and held it for the win.
• At 149 pounds, redshirt sophomore Patrick Ryan got off to a strong start with the first takedown for a 2-0 lead, but Michael North answered quickly and later won 9-3.
• Senior Tim Fitzpatrick (174) kept a win streak alive, making it seven in a row with a 3-2 decision over Dominic Solis. The score was tied 1-1 early in the third when Fitzpatrick took Solis to the edge of the mat for a takedown with 28 seconds left. Solis got an escape point but the lead was enough for Fitzpatrick to hold on.
• Sophomore Isaac Righter (285) took Zach Schrader to overtime in the final dual match of the night, but lost 3-1 in sudden victory. Schrader cost his team one point for unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of the bout.
• Freshmen Jack Nies (157) and Carsten Rawls (197) both scored victories in extra countable matches. Nies came away with a 5-1 decision vs. Conner Decker, and Rawls won by fall in 2:11 vs. Kevin Makosy.
