ITHACA, N.Y. -- No. 14 Wisconsin won the final two matches of the day to break a 13-13 tie and earned six victories from ranked wrestlers to earn a 19-13 win on Saturday afternoon at a sold-out Friedman Wrestling Center. The Badgers improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Big Red fell to 0-1 after dropping the opener.
Vito Arujau picked up a huge 17-6 major decision victory at 133 pounds over No. 18 Taylor LaMont and
Vince Cornella won his dual debut at 141 pounds over No. 18 Joe Zargo as Cornell built a 7-3 lead. Unranked
Brett Ungar gave No. 9 Eric Barnett all he could handle at 125 before falling 6-5.
In the highlight match of the day, senior
Yianni Diakomihalis had his 75-match win streak snapped, losing for just the second time as a collegian after falling to No. 3 Austin Gomez at 149 pounds, 9-3. A big four-point move in the second period put Gomez up 5-0, and the three-time NCAA champion couldn't get anything going to fall to 94-2 in his storied career.
That win gave Wisconsin all the momentum and the Badgers claimed four of the final six matches of the day, including tossups at 197 and 285.
Chris Foca and All-American
Jonathan Loew picked up victories at 174 and 184 to momentarily tie the dual, but Wisconsin closed by scratching out narrow wins at the final two weights in matchups between ranked grapplers.
