Hofstra Falls To American In Dual Meet Opener

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra and American split the 10 matches in their dual, but American scored a pair of pins and the bonus points were the difference in a 21-16 victory over the Pride Thursday night in an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling match at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. 

Hofstra moved to 0-1 with the loss, while American improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the EIWA.

Hofstra opened the match with a pair of decision victories to take a 6-0 lead. 27th ranked Trey Rogers scored a 3-1 win over Connor Bourne at 197 pounds and 29th ranked Zachary Knighton-Ward followed with a 7-3 win over William Jarrell at 285. 

Max Leete tied the match for the Eagles with a win by fall over the Pride's Jacob Moon at 125 pounds. Jack Maida then picked up a 2-0 decision at 133 over Hofstra's Chase Liardi to make it 9-6 in favor of the visitors. Justin Hoyle dominated Raymond Lopez at 141 to put the Pride back on top, 10-9, following a 15-2 major decision. 

The match turned in the next three weight classes as American won by decision at 149 and 157, and by fall at 165 to take a 21-10 lead. Antonio Segura posted a 6-3 win over Michael Leandrou at 149, Jack Nies won, 3-1, over Joe McGinty at 157 with a late third period takedown to snap a 1-1 tie. Matt Rogers jumped out to an 8-3 lead after one period at 165 only to see American's Caleb Campos battle back to tie the score at 9 after two periods before scoring the pin at the 5:42 mark.

Ross McFarland did not allow a point in a 5-0 decision victory over American's Lucas White at 174 pounds, while 26th ranked Jacob Ferreira picked up a 7-3 victory over Colin Shannon of American at 184 pounds to close out the dual. 

The teams also conducted six countable extra matches prior to the dual, splitting those. Alex Turley had a 5-3 decision win over American's Shamil Kalmattov at 133 pounds, while Ericson Velasquez scored an 11-2 major decision over Brad Kata at 184 pounds, and Nikolas Miller had a win by fall over Carsten Rawls at 197 pounds. 

Hofstra returns to action on New Year's Day at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
