Wrestling Splits Opening Day Meets

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Bucknell wrestling opened the 2024-25 campaign by splitting a pair of duals against Kent State and Maryland on Sunday afternoon. Bucknell eviscerated Kent State 35-9 and dropped a 26-11 decision to Maryland. The Orange & Blue scored 30+ points five times in 2023-24. 

Dillon Bechtold, Dylan Chappell, and Myles Takats headlined the Bison effort by delivering 2-0 days.

Kent State Recap

Bucknell blitzed to a 20-0 lead before the Golden Flashes won a duel. Kade Davidheiser (125) recorded a decision over Nico Calello. No. 11 Kurt Phipps began his season on a high note with a technical fall (16-0) over Tyeler Hagensen. No. 25 Dylan Chappell grabbed his first win by beating Eli Ascroft by a fall. Braden Bower added a decision win over Billy Meiszner. Cade Wirnsberger edged Aaron Ferguson in a 3-2 decision for the final victory in the 20-0 run. 

After a Kent State win that cut the score to 20-6, Bucknell started a 15-0 run. No. 29 Myles Takats won a technical fall over Waylon Wehler. Logan Deacetis picked up a major decision over Trent Thomas. Bucknell's final win came on a Dillon Bechtold fall over Blake Schaffer. Kent State won the final match but the Bison were thrilled with the 35-9 destruction.

Maryland Recap

The Bison inched within 6-3 but never got closer as the Terrapins's Big Ten power proved too much for the Orange & Blue. Chappell recorded its second win of the day by defeating Michael Pizzuto in a decision. 

Bucknell would not score again until Takats obtained a technical fall over Branson John, cutting the deficit to 18-8. Another chance of a rally was scorched when No. 9 Jaxon Smith beat Deacetis in a major decision. Bechtold finished the Bison scoring with a decision (9-6) over Chase Mielnik.

The Bison welcome Morgan State to the EIWA next Sunday at 4 p.m. when Bucknell travels back to the Old Line State to face the Bears. Morgan State joined the EIWA this summer to become the association's 12th member. Bucknell smashed Morgan State 41-9 last year in Davis Gym.
