WASHINGTON, D.C. – Key victories down the stretch gave the Sacred Heart University men's wrestling team a win in its season opener. The Pioneers defeated American, 17-16, on Saturday.
Sacred Heart starts the year at 1-0 while the Eagles fell to 0-1.
Back-to-back decisions by
Anthony Petrillo and
Jordan Carlucci gave the Pioneers a 6-3 lead. Returning NCAA qualifier
Nick Palumbo recorded a 10-2 major decision at 157 pounds to put SHU up 10-6.
After American answered with its own major, at 174 pounds sophomore
Scott Jarosz responded with 10-1 major decision that ended up being the difference in the match as they took a 14-10 margin. In the 197-pound bout, senior Dante Delbonis got a takedown in the final seconds for a 5-2 decision to build a 17-13 lead.
The Pioneers get back on the mat November 13 when they face second-ranked Penn State.
