Tigers Win Eight Bouts in Defeating Brown, 36-6

January 28, 2023 | Wrestling

Closing a back-to-back Ivy League home weekend in Jadwin Gym, the Princeton wrestling team won eight bouts overall and closed Saturday night with six straight wins in a 36-6 victory over Brown.

The meet started with a forfeit at 125 to Nick Kayal, and Patrick Glory followed it with a 10-3 win at 133, getting a takedown in each of the first two periods and closing strong with two more in the third.

Brown's two wins came back-to-back at 141 and 149. Ian Oswalt had a 5-2 win for the Bears at 141, answering an early takedown from Christopher Martino with a third period that saw a go-ahead takedown along with his second escape of the bout and the riding-time point. At 149, Rocco Camillaci also had a first-period takedown before Ricky Cabanillas had a takedown of his own in each of the final two periods on the way to a 7-3 win.

Brown was within 9-6 after four matches, but Princeton closed the night with six straight wins. Two of those came by injury default, both in the first minute of the bouts at 165 and 197. Quincy Monday, ranked No. 3 by the NCAA coaches, and Luke Stout, ranked No. 17, each earned six points for the Tigers with those injury-default wins.

Along with the two injury-default wins, two more were bonus-point victories. At 184, Nate Dugan rolled up 10 takedowns in a 23-8 win over Nick Oliveri that became a technical fall once Dugan was awarded the riding-time point at the end of the match.

Travis Stefanik, ranked No. 33 by the NCAA coaches, closed the night with an 11-0 major-decision win over Alex Semenenko at heavyweight, opening a six-point lead with a first-period takedown and a four-point near-fall before adding another takedown in each of the final two periods.

Princeton's two wins by decision over the final six came from Ty Whalen at 157 and Kole Mulhauser at 174. Whalen had a takedown in each of the first two periods on the way to a 6-3 win over Samuel McMonagle with the second of those giving Whalen a 5-2 lead.

Mulhauser's win was also 6-3, over Drew Clearie, with Muhlhauser matching Clearie's first-period takedown with another to go up 3-2 at the end of one period, and a third-period takedown solidified the win.

The Tigers will have a Central New York doubleheader next Saturday, starting the day with a noon visit to Cornell before a 5 p.m. visit to Binghamton.
