CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Despite a strong start to the dual with back-to-back wins and a 9-0 lead, American University wrestling managed just four wins overall and lost 23-15 at the University of Virginia on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles now stand at 7-8 for the season, while the Cavaliers improve to 7-5.

Notable

• The national anthem had barely finished before AU's top highlight of the day, a pin for sophomore Maximilian Leete just 22 seconds into his match against Patrick McCormick at 125 pounds.
• It was the 11th win by fall of the season for Leete, who is now tied for first place in NCAA Division I.
• Sophomore Jack Maida kept the early run going with a 6-2 decision against Keyveon Roller at 133 pounds, sealing the deal with a late takedown and riding time for a 9-0 American lead.
• From there, three ranked wrestlers helped the Cavaliers rattle off four straight wins including one tech fall to put the Eagles down 14-9.
• Redshirt freshman Lucas White put AU back in the dual with a shutout, 4-0 win against Justin Phillips at 174 pounds.
• Two more nationally ranked competitors helped UVA get bonus-point victories at 184 and 197 to assure the Cavaliers the team victory.
• American ended the day on a high note with a 7-4 win for redshirt junior Will Jarrell at heavyweight, putting him at 11-9 for the season.
