Two Champions Crowned for Wrestling Among 11 Placewinners at The Citadel Open

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Two champions and two runners-up were included among 11 placewinners for American University wrestling in a very successful day for the Eagles at The Citadel Open. Freshman Raymond Lopez (125) and sophomore Jack Maida (133) both went 4-0 on their way to first-place finishes in their respective weight classes.

NOTABLE
  • Lopez is now 6-1 in his debut season at AU. His wins today included a pin, technical fall and major decision leading up to the final.
  • Down 1-0 heading into the third period against The Citadel's Blair Orr in the first-place bout, Lopez tied it up and then got a takedown and riding time for a 4-1 victory.
  • Maida pinned his first opponent and posted a major decision over Duke's Drake Doolittle in the semifinal, beating Doolittle for the second week in a row.
  • In the 133-lb first-place bout, Maida got an escape and the riding time point for a 2-0 win over George Rosas of The Citadel.
  • Like Lopez, Maida also now stands at 6-1 for the season.
  • Sophomore Maximilian Leete took fifth place at 125 pounds, going 4-1 and defeating Southeastern's Isaac Crowell 8-5 in the fifth-place bout. Leete's four wins included an impressive three wins by fall, and two of those were in under a minute.
  • At 157, redshirt sophomore Jack Nies went 3-0 before falling in the semifinals. He rebounded for a 7-5 win over Southeastern's Salvador Silva in the third-place bout.
  • Among the victories for Nies were a major decision, and a defeat of Duke's Nick Tattini for the second week in a row.
  • Freshman Caleb Campos went 3-1 on his way to taking third place at 165, and finished it off with a 17-1 technical fall in the third-place bout.
  • Redshirt freshman Lucas White won his first two bouts before falling 5-1 in the first-place bout to take second at 174 pounds.
  • Graduate student Colin Shannon went 3-1 at 184 and earned third place by way of an 18-8 major decision over The Citadel's Will Rogers. Shannon is now 5-1 for the season.
  • At 197, redshirt junior Connor Bourne went 3-1, losing only in the first-place match.
  • Freshman Liam Volk-Klos took fifth at 197 after dropping his opening bout but finishing the day 3-0.
  • Junior Will Jarrell and redshirt sophomore Isaac Righter came up against each other for third place at heavyweight, and it was Jarrell who prevailed with a pin of Righter in 1:14.
  • Overall, the Eagles pinned 10 opponents, recorded eight wins by major decision and two victories by tech fall.
Thoughts from Head Coach Jason Borrelli
  • "I thought it was a pretty good day. What really stood out to me is that in all the placing matches, we only lost three, and two if you take out the heavyweight bout that had two of our guys. That's a high percentage of guys who closed out with a win. We went 41-20 overall which is a lot of wins when compared to the open tournaments we competed in last year. We're really turning a corner. Our youth still shows, but it really shows in our technique and not in our competitive mindset. We've matured significantly in terms of our expectations. We have to get better technically, but that's easier as a coach than the other way around of not having the right mindset."
