Maryland (3-2) won the final four matches of Saturday night's dual with Navy (0-1) at the Xfinity Center Pavilion, including a 3-1 victory by heavyweight Zach Schrader in the finale bout of the night, to slip past the Mids 18-16 in what was Navy's first dual of the season.
Navy jumped out to a big 8-0 lead thanks to team captain
Jacob Allen's (Sr / 125 / Poway, Calif.) tech fall (19-2) in the first match of the evening, followed by a 7-1 decision by rookie 133-pounder
Josh Koderhandt (Belleville, Ill.).
The Terps chipped away at the Mids' lead with back-to-back decisions, including a tight 3-2 victory by Michael North over first-year Navy starter
PJ Crane (Jr / Horsham, Pa.) at 149 pounds.
The Mids battled right back and opened up their largest lead of the night (+10) with consecutive major decisions by 18th-ranked
Andrew Cerniglia (So / 157 / Nazareth, Pa.) and
Val Park (Jr / 165 / Edmond, Okla.).
Maryland, however, was given new life when sophomore Dominic Solis picked up an 8-6 win in sudden victory over Navy's
Shane Finney (Sr / Carlsbad, Calif.) at 174 pounds. The Terps would earn upset victories in each of their next two bouts to set the stage between the No. 32 (Zach Schrader, Maryland) and No. 33 (
Riley Smith / Sr / Mason, Mich.) ranked wrestlers with just a point separating the two teams. Schrader would go on to clinch the Maryland victory in sudden victory by way of a 3-1 decision.
