#20 Wrestling Edged 16-15 at Stanford on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA – The 20th-ranked University of Pennsylvania wrestling team dropped a close contest at Stanford on Sunday afternoon. This marks the second straight dual for the Red and Blue that has come down to the final weight class. This time Penn found itself needing more than three team points to force a tie or take a lead. Even with #15 Anthony Artalona closing the meet with an 11-5 decision, the Cardinal prevailed for the 16-15 victory.

The Cardinal opened the meet with a pair of decision wins at 165 and 174. At 184, Maximus Hale got his first dual win of the season with an 8-2 decision over Brook Byers. Hale opened the bout with a takedown and led 4-1 after the first period. As he built up more than two minutes of riding time in the second period, he also extended his lead to 6-2. The win at 184 cut the Stanford lead in half, 6-3. Nick Stemmet's 11-3 major decision over #33 Cole Urbas at 197 pounds proved to be the difference in the dual. Stanford extended its lead to 13-3 with a 5-2 decision victory for Peter Ming over #27 Ben Goldin.

After the intermission, Penn closed out the dual with wins at four of the final five weight classes. Penn earned decision wins at 125, 133, 141, and 157. The second half of the dual began with an incredible 7-4 decision of #31 Ryan Miller over #15 Nico Provo. #9 Michael Colaiocco earned an 8-4 decision over Jackson Disario and Carmen Ferrante got the final point from riding time as he won by a 4-3 decision. #10 Doug Zapf lost by a 3-2 decision to #22 Jaden Abas. Needing four team points to tie the dual, Artalona earned a 10-5 decision over Charlie Darracott. The decision only pulled Penn within one point as Stanford took the dual, 16-15.
