Hofstra: Hofstra Tops EIWA Foe Sacred Heart At The Northeast Duals

Troy, NY – Jamel Hudson, Cody Ruggirello and Michael Hughes each went 2-1 on the day as the Hofstra Pride Wrestling team recorded a 1-2 record at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College Saturday.

The Pride dropped a 33-9 decision to fifth-ranked Missouri and a 27-9 decision to 23rd-ranked North Carolina State before defeating Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association opponent, Sacred Heart in the finale, 32-13. Hofstra is now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the EIWA.

In the opening match against the powerful Tigers of Missouri, which has eight wrestlers ranked in the top 20 this week, the Pride faced top 15 grapplers in each of their first five matches including three in the top seven. Hofstra found themselves down 19-0 before senior Nick Terdick put the Pride on the board with an 11-9 decision over Cody Johnston at 165. The Tigers won the next three matches, two by bonus points, before Hofstra sophomore Michael Hughes closed out the contest with a win by forfeit at 285 for the 33-9 decision. Missouri is now 4-0 on the season.

Hofstra's second match of the day, against #23 North Carolina State, got off to a better start for the Pride as the two teams split the first two matches with Hofstra taking a 9-7 lead. The Pride's 17th-ranked sophomore Jamel Hudson defeated 15th-ranked Sam Speno, 8-3 at 141 before graduate-student Cody Ruggirello gave Hofstra the lead with a pin of Brian Hamann at 149. But the Wolfpack responded by winning the next six matches, including two major decisions, to roll to the 27-9 victory. North Carolina State improved to 5-1.

The Pride's final match in the duals was an EIWA encounter with the Pioneers of Sacred Heart. Hofstra improved to 6-0 against the Pioneers with a dominating 32-13 victory. The Pride won the first five matches, including wins by fall by Krasavage at 133 and Ruggirello, his second of the day, at 149 and Hudson's second major decision on the day, to jump out to a 23-0 lead. Sacred Heart won the next three matches before Michael Oxley recorded a win at 197 and Michael Hughes tallied his fourth pin of the season at 285 to close out the contest.

Hofstra will return to action next weekend when they compete in the Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Invitational at the Last Vegas Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, December 5-6.
