Cornell: Wrestling Goes A Perfect 3-0 At Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. – The Cornell wrestling team has quality from top to bottom a number of times over, and that depth was on full display as the Big Red ripped through the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals with three wins on Saturday afternoon at Hudson Valley Community College. The Big Red topped Division II Power Kutztown 43-4, No. 23 North Carolina State 20-13 and West Virginia 26-9 to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Stalwarts Nahshon Garrett (125), Chris Villalonga (149) and Gabe Dean each went 3-0 on the day and combined for six bonus point wins, including three by Garrett. All three were equally impressive in their own way, but a number of other results played key roles in the unbeaten dual meet day.

At 174, Duke Pickett earned an important 5-3 decision over No. 17 Pete Renda of N.C. State, a match the Wildcats needed to have to pull the upset. Leading just 10-9 through six matches, Pickett's victory allowed Cornell to get to Dean, who earned a major decision over Michael Macchiavello. Nationally ranked Jace Bennett capped the win with his narrow 1-0 victory. Mark Grey's exciting overtime victory over No. 15 Sam Speno was also a highlight.

Cornell won its first nine bouts of the day, including the last four by pin, to race out to a 43-0 lead. Only reigning Division II National Wrestler of the Year Ziad Haddad was able to break the shutout with his major decision victory at heavyweight to avoid the shutout. Freshman Jacob Taylor joined senior Jesse Shanaman, sophomore Steve Congenie and Dean in earning falls in the dual.

The middle weights also provided key results against the Mountaineers, as the Big Red rallied from an early 6-4 deficit through three bouts to run away with the victory. Garrett got the match started right with a dominant 19-8 major over No. 19 Zeke Moisey thanks to a huge third period, but it was five straight wins from 149 to 184, including a pair of one-point decisions, that proved to be the difference. Jacob Aiken-Phillips wasted little time ending the dual, pinning his opponent just 39 seconds into the match to end the weekend on a high note.

The Big Red will hit the mat for the final time before the exam break when the team's lineup will compete at the Las Vegas Invitational beginning on Friday, Dec. 5.
