*AUSTIN BISHOP competed in the first year of Manheim (PA) high school wrestling in 1923. He went on to wrestle for the legendary Charlie Mayser at F&M, compiling a 20-1-0 career record with 10 falls. He was an official at the 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games.

      Bishop was a very successful coach at the University of Pennsylvania from 1937-42 and at his Alma Mater from 1946-48. At Penn, he coached Quaker all-time great Dick DiBatista to two NCAA titles and a perfect career record. Bishop also formed the "Grapplers Club," the first booster club for college wrestling, to "promote the sport of intercollegiate wrestling at Pennsylvania and encourage good fellowship of those interested."

      Austin is also the man often credited with starting the Wilkes Open, a fixture of the holiday season that became known as the “Rose Bowl of Wrestling”; and, along with Myron Roderick and Stan Zeamer, he founded the National Hall of Fame - State Chapter program in the 1990s.  In 1994 Bishop was elected to the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Service and was a member of the Helms Foundation National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport. He passed away in 1995.
