DARRYL BURLEY, Lehigh ’79, remains the most accomplished undergrad wrestler in LU history, having reached the NCAA and Midlands finals nine times in 10 entries. In his first month, he lost 14-13 to legendary Randy Lewis in Grace Hall. In his last bout Darryl ended the then 3^rd-longest win streak (84), beating Mike Land, 9-7, at 133 pounds on his home mat at Iowa State. In all, Burley finessed a 94-5-1 mark (.945, 3^rd-best LU) with a stunning school record 76% bonus rate of all bouts. The only six blemishes were vs. NCAA champs from Iowa and Iowa State, Lewis and Jim Gibbons.

      Lehigh’s 1^st-ever undergrad Midlands titlist, Darryl achieved it vs. Lewis while red-shirting in 1981-82. He then moved up to 142 to beat Nebraska’s Al Freeman in the National finals to complete an unbeaten 26-0 season. In six Midlands entries, Burley placed 2, 2, 1,2,1, the last one two years after graduation. In 1984, he placed fourth at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Darryl since has practiced law after getting his degree from Hofstra Law School and currently lives in the Pemberton, NJ area with his wife and two children.
