ED CARLIN, Coach,
Syracuse, in 34 seasons as head coach, Ed’s
teams won 279 dual meets. Once scholarships were introduced in 1974
the Orangemen went 240-116-5 for a .672 winning percentage. Carlin
won his fifth EIWA team title in 1994, among three achieved in his
final decade. In all, Ed won six team titles and six runners-up and
he coached two of the NCAA’s greatest-ever wrestlers:
heavyweight Jim Nance (NCAA 1,1, one career loss) and Gene Mills
(3,4,1,1, member of 1980 U.S. Olympic Team). His 1963 Syracuse team
placed fourth at NCAAs, among 20 Top 20 teams. As either assistant
or head coach, Ed mentored all 22 Orangeman All-Americans.
Carlin coached 41 individual EIWA
champions and was inducted into the New York State Wrestling
Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986. After retiring, he remained in the
area as a resident of Brewerton, NY, just North of Syracuse on
Oneida Lake.
