ED DEWITTE, Pitt ‘56 won two Pennsylvania state titles in high school and later won an EIWA championship in 1956 for Hall of Fame coach, Rex Peery, at the U. of Pittsburgh. In his prior two Easterns, Ed had placed second by losing both finals to NCAA Top 3’s, Ed Rooney of Syracuse and Joe Gattuso of Navy. DeWitte was a two-time All-American, placing third as a junior at 157, with the sole loss a referee’s decision vs. 2-time NCAA champ, Bill Weick.  

      After placing third as a junior, DeWitte won an NCAA title at 167 by beating defending champ, Oklahoma State’s Fred Davis (NCAA 4,1,2). While in the Army, Ed won the 1960 U.S. Olympic Trials and placed 4th in the Olympic Games at 174. After defeating a world champion from Russia, Ed’s only loss came against the Gold Medalist from Turkey. DeWitte continues to attend amateur wrestling meets from his hometown in Waynesburg, PA.
