*GEORGE FEUERBACH, Lehigh
‘52 is one of the four EIWA wrestlers
ever to win three league titles at three weights, while amassing a
stellar 37-5-1 career record. He became Lehigh’s third
three-time EIWA champion by winning at 137 vs. two-time NCAA third,
Penn State’s Gerry Maurey. The 7-3 win helped earn the
Outstanding Wrestler Award. Feuerbach also beat Maurey, 8-1, in a
road dual. Among George’s few defeats were two NCAAs bouts
against national finalists and two bouts up a weight, including a
4-3 loss at 147 against national runner-up, Don Frey. After
competing for renowned Spring Gardner at Mepham High, Feuerbach
became captain at Lehigh.
George was accomplished in
freestyle and won a Junior Metropolitan AAU title and NY State AAU
crown. He represented the NYAC at four National AAU championships.
Lieutenant George Feuerbach joined the U.S. Air Force as a pilot
and died in 1956, after an equipment malfunction caused a crash
during a carrier takeoff.
