STEPHEN FRIEDMAN, Cornell
’59: After two EIWA 2nd places to 3-time
champion, Dave Johnson, Friedman won in 1959 by beating Lehigh's
Greg Ruth, a future 2-time NCAA champion at Oklahoma and Olympian.
Pursuing freestyle while at Columbia Law, Stephen beat Doug
Blubaugh at the NYAC tourney three months after the Olympic
champion won gold. In 1961, Steve added a National AAU title but
retired rather than accept a U.S. World Team berth.
Friedman joined Goldman, Sachs in
1966 and became a partner in 1973, vice chairman and co-COO from
1987-90, and co-chairman or chairman from 1990-94. He currently
serves as chairman of Stone Point Capital, LLC. Steve has served as
chairman of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and
of the Intelligence Oversight Board. He served as assistant to
President George W. Bush for Economic Policy and director of the
National Economic Council. He’s been a board member of
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, The Aspen Institute and the
Council on Foreign Relations.
Friedman and wife, Barbara (CU
’59), are active supporters of their school, serving as
university trustees. The Friedman Wrestling Center and the Friedman
Strength and Conditioning Center are named to recognize their
support.
