DAVE JOHNSON, Pitt
’58 was a three-time EIWA champion for the
Panthers in the thick of the league’s greatest decade.
Competing at 157 in 1956 and 1958, and at 167 in ’57, Johnson
was the league’s top seed all three times, earned a perfect
13-0 in league championship competition and had a 27-3 lifetime
dual record. Although he never placed at Nationals, he was seeded
2nd, 4th, 2nd and his best run was
losing, 3-1, to Oklahoma State legend, Doug Blubaugh in the 1958
semis. The Cowboy placed NCAA 3,2,1 and by 1960 was a Pan Am and
Olympic champion.
During Johnson’s tenure, Pitt
placed first and second in the EIWA and 3rd,
2nd, 9th nationally. A native of Lock
Haven, PA, Johnson coached the Panthers two seasons (1965-67) and
graduated from the University Dental School. All three of
Johnson’s sons - Doug, Mike and Marc - wrestled and
lettered at Pitt and earned degrees from the Dental School.
