HAROLD MASEM, Lehigh
’40, was 20-1 in duals and 35-4 overall in
1938-40, winning a national title as senior and the first of five
EIWA wrestlers ever to win three titles at three different weights,
135, 145, 155. He enjoyed an unbeaten senior season, climaxed
by four straight wins at NCAAs over Big Ten opponents. In the
semi-finals, he defeated the defending runner-up at 165 pounds,
before beating two-time runner –up, Bill Combs of
Michigan.
During his three-year varsity
career, Harold managed a 3-1 win/loss mark vs. his Nittany Lion
arch-rival, Joe Scalzo, the national runner-up in 1939. Masem
returned to his roots to become a senior engineer for the Minnesota
Highway Department, before retiring to teach public speaking. As a
hobby, he often displayed his balloon sculpture skills for Twin
Cities area children.
