ROY PHILLIPS, Franklin & Marshall
‘34 coached for 28 seasons, including stints
at Upper Merion High School, Penn, Valley Forge Military Academy
and F&M, where he was coach for 18 years before serving as
athletic director. He has been inducted into the halls of fame at
F&M, at District 3 in PA and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches
Hall of Fame.
A leading volunteer, Roy was
secretary-treasurer and president of the EIWA Coaches Association
from 1956-61 and also president of the EIWA from 1967-70. He also
officiated meets from 1934-55. As a wrestler at F&M, Phillips
was 32-2 in duals (30 by fall) and in 1934 was an undefeated
captain of his unbeaten Diplomats. Roy placed 2nd in the
nation at 135 pounds in 1933, with Harvard’s Pat Johnson
third. Ironically, neither school was an EIWA member then.
