JOHN REICH, Navy
’83, is the Academy’s only three-time
All-American and owns the school record for most falls with 63. He
placed fourth nationally as a freshman – the only USNA plebe
ever to medal. After sophomore injuries, John then placed third and
second in the nation in ’82 and ’83, losing to the
Outstanding Wrestler as a senior. In that season, Reich was 32-2
with 25 falls. Seeded four times nationally (#8,6,4,2), John owned
a 16-5 record at his four NCAAs; he won two bouts by 28-5 and 29-2,
and all five defeats came vs. champions.
Reich split two East-West
All-Star bouts and pinned Fresno’s Sylvester Carver, an NCAA
3,5. After John’s final EIWA title, he added the Outstanding
Wrestler Award and the Sheridan Trophy for most falls (3). He was
the Midshipmen’s first to win 100 bouts, en route to a 119-16
career and .881 win percentage.
