TOM SCHULER, Navy
’72, is one of Navy’s five three-time
EIWA champions, achieved from 1970-72 at 118 pounds. One of just
two Midshipmen to earn two Top 3 seeds (with Pete Blair), Tom was
50-6 his last two years and placed second and fourth nationally. In
1971 he was leading 3-time NCAA champion, Greg Johnson (Michigan
State) 5-3 in the third period before losing, 6-5, on riding time.
To get there, #3 seed Schuler up-ended #2 Ray Stapp (Oklahoma
State), in a 7-7,2-2 referee’s decision. As a senior, Tom was
upset by Arizona’s three-time All-American, Dale Brumit.
The other half of a renowned duo
with Olympian Lloyd Keaser (NCAA 3,4) Schuler had just one close
win while going 12-0 at Easterns. The dominant Mids placed
1st, 2nd, 1st as a team by winning
13 of 16. As a post-grad, Tom earned an alternate berth on the U.S.
Olympic Team for the 1976 Games in Montreal.
