*DR. VINCENT ZUARO,Holy Cross
’47, Brooklyn’sVince Zuaro was a
standout athlete for Boy’s High School. He attended Holy
Cross and made the outstanding defensive play of the 1946 Orange
Bowl. Vince received master’s and PhD degrees from NYU,
retiring in 1983 as Superintendent of Schools. His wrestling
career began in 1953 as coach of Freeport HS (LI). Zuaro’s
record after 11 years at Freeport and two at Columbia University
was 132-62.
First officiating in 1963,
founded in ’69 the U.S. Wrestling Officials Association and
authored the U.S. Federation rule book for two decades. Vince
created the first freestyle officiating clinics and trained over
5,000 officials, retiring in 1988. He officiated 12 NCAAs, five
Olympics and 34 World Championships. Vince received five F.I.L.A
Crosses of Honor, international wrestling’s top award.
He helped found the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, was inducted
as a Distinguished Member (an officials’ room named after
him); was a founder of the U.S. Wrestling Federation, was named the
Federation’s Man of the Year in 1972. He passed away in 2011
after having been inducted into numerous halls of fame, including
Helms.
