MIKE FRICK, Lehigh
’76 earned one of the most unique
achievements in college wrestling history by earning seven wins vs.
six different current or future NCAA champions – and doing it
by winning at all five weight classes from 118 to 150. In his
fourth freshman bout, he beat 118 lb Iowa senior, Dan Sherman, 9-7,
that year’s NCAA champion. In his final career bout at 134
Mike overcame a late 3-0 deficit to beat Michigan State’s
best ever, Pat Milkovich, 7-4 (NCAA 1,1,2,2, one of the top
defensive wrestlers in history). Atop the victory stand, Mike owned
in his career wins against the 1st and 3rd placer that year at 142
and the 3rd, 4th at 150, all four were past or future champions, in
addition to Milkovich. Earlier that year, Frick placed Midlands
2nd – at 150, weighing in at 144 – and by
7-1 marging (three takedowns) beat Michigan’s best ever, Mark
Churella, NCAA 3,1,1,1 at 150 and 167.
Frick won two EIWA Outstanding
Wrestling Awards as a freshman and junior, while adding the
Fletcher Award in ’76. As a home builder and remodeler in the
Nazareth area, he and wife, Linda, raised four sons, including
two-time All-American Travis.
